Climate Change Debate

This year was the year to break records. Records of heat, rain and snow. These record-breaking weather changes brought representatives from both sides to speak on the topic. The debate has become so intense and the year isn’t even over yet!

For years, there has been much support for the fact that climate change is happening. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has gathered evidence to support the fact that the world is getting warmer. The debate has no longer become “if climate change is happening,” it is now “why is climate change happening.” Explanations for ‘why’ have come to be whether it due to the activities of man or due to the natural cycles of the earth.

Supporters of the idea that climate change has been caused by the habits of humans, attribute it to our burning of fossil fuels, thus adding to the greenhouse effect. The EPA explains that our dependence on oil for plastic and gasoline has lead to pollution trapping heat in our atmosphere. It is possible to stop or slow global warming, supporters say. It is only through changing are activities that we can bring change. In this infographic, “doing something about global warming,” relates to the choices one makes in their everyday lives.

Solving Global Warming, Doing Something By Learning Fundamentals

Now supporters if the idea that climate change is a natural cause, attribute it to the paleo data covering the past 1 million years that shows the Earth cycling through warm periods and ice ages. They attribute little or no responsibility to human activity. Forbes reported that, climate change is a hoax, politically driven to push through a specific agenda. In this video, supporters of natural causes of global warming point out a clip from Spongebob Squarepants where they discuss climate change in the episode. They criticized the episode focusing on the acts of the characters adding to global warming.

There is scientific support for both sides of this issue. There is no doubt that climate change is happening. The evidence is in the forecast. The debate should now be whether we can stop it or if we should just prepare for what is to come.
